Crispy Air Fried Garlic Chicken with a Sweet Persimmon and Pepper Crunch

While I usually have the smoker rolling, this Air Fried Garlic Chicken is my secret weapon for easy meals during the week. By pairing seasonal persimmon with pepper, we’re bringing those high-end backyard BBQ flavors right into your kitchen with minimal effort. If you’re into quick, flavor-packed chicken dinners like this one, you’ll probably also love my Sweet Heat Lemon Pepper Chicken Wings.

The sweetness of ripe persimmon plays perfectly against the heat of Aleppo pepper and a good hit of garlic, giving this dish way more depth than your average weeknight chicken. It’s proof that big flavor doesn’t have to mean a long cook time.

This one’s built for speed without cutting corners. The air fryer gets you crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside, no babysitting a grill required. I roast the Delicata squash right alongside it, so the whole plate comes together in about 20 minutes flat.

Got two air fryers? Run the chicken and squash at the same time. Only one? No problem — cook the squash first, keep it warm, then finish with the chicken. Either way, you’re looking at a colorful, flavor-packed dinner in under half an hour.

Description

My Air Fried Crispy Chicken Recipe is a bit different but SUPER TASTY!. I have loved air frying dishes just as much as by bbq. Nearly every friend I know has an air fryer and more and more people are getting them every day. This is a very flavor dish that you can pull off in 20 minutes with two air fryers, or you can do the squash first, keep it warm and then do the chicken.

    1. PREPARE CRISPY COATING
    2.  Mix one bag of Shake & Bake coating with 6T of rub.
Mix in bag and place on plate to prepare for the chicken.
    3. PREPARE CHICKEN
    4. Take your two breast of chicken and coat them with garlic whip on once side
Place the garlic whip side down on the crispy coating mix.
Coat the chicken face up toward you with more garlic whip.
Turn over carefully and coat the side you just put the garlic whip on.
Be careful not to hold to tight as you do not want to disturb the crispy coating mixture.
    5. PREPARE DELICATA SQUASH
    6. Slice Delicata squash in half and clean out center, then cut both halves width wise.
In a bowl, mix the squash with the garlic whip (I used about 4T).
Coat Delicate garlic whipped squash with Knotty Wood BBQ rub or your favorite seasoning.
    7. COOKING CHICKEN
    8. Preheat your air fryer for 5 min. on preheat setting
Place chicken in air fryer for 15 minutes on 380ºF for breasts thicker than 1.5 inches or 350ºF for less thick chicken breats.
      No need to turn.
Let rest for 5 min. then slice for plate when ready.
    9. COOKING DELICATA SQUASH
    10. Air fry at 380ºF for 15 min. then increase temperature to 400ºF for 6-8 minutes and checking every 2 minutes. You
want them tender to pierce and moist.
    11. FINISH THE DISH
    12. Cut your chicken and place on plate

Note

Surround your chicken with the squash.
Slice your persimmon and place around plate.
Sprinkle Aleppo pepper over food especially the persimmons.
Sprinkle chives around for some nice contrast and flavor

Frequently Asked Questions

Expand All:

Can I use chicken thighs instead of breasts?

Totally — thighs work great here. They've got more fat than breasts, so they're a little more forgiving if you leave them in an extra minute. Just pull the cook time back slightly since thighs tend to be smaller.

What if I don't have an air fryer — can I bake this instead?

Of course. Pop it in the oven at 400°F on a wire rack over a baking sheet for about 25-30 minutes, flipping it halfway through. It won't come out quite as crispy as the air fryer version, but it'll still be delicious.

How do I know when the chicken is fully cooked?

The easiest way is a reliable thermometer — you're looking for 165°F inside. Don't have one? Cut into the thickest part and check that the juices run clear, not pink.

Where can I find persimmons, and when are they in season?

You'll have the best luck between October and January. Look in your grocery store's produce section or swing by a farmers market. Outside that window, they can be hit or miss.

Can I swap out the Delicata squash?

Go for it — butternut squash or sweet potato both work well. Just cut them about the same size so everything cooks evenly together.
